Small Business Innovation Research Programs (SBIR/STTR)
The SBIR program funds research and development efforts of a high-risk nature that may have excellent commercial potential. These programs were created in part to: 1) stimulate technological innovation, 2) use small business to meet Federal R&D needs, and 3) increase private sector commercialization derived from Federal R&D. The STTR program is similar, but requires a non-profit partner.

U.S. Department of Energy Inventions and Innovations Program
This program provides financial assistance at two levels: up to $40,000 or up to $200,000—depending on the stage of development—for establishing technical performance and early development for ideas that have a significant energy savings impact and future commercial potential.
Applications are accepted through a competitive solicitation process, open for about three months annually (for example, from May 1 to July 31). In addition financial assistance, technical guidance and commercialization support is offered to successful applicants. For more information, contact:
